I've been going through alot of inner conflict about my next project. My only enemy is my inner me, as Lupe would say. In working on my follow up to the Red Carpet EP, it's been hard trying to figure out where I wanted my next project to go. In alot of ways, the Red Carpet EP was a big success. Five thousand plus downloads with no major promotion, songs still in rotation in numerous places and on many different deejay's playlists, and just pure great feedback, what more could i ask for? But it's these things that pressure me to do better. I feel like whatever I come out with next has to be ridiculously insane. I want to change the way the people think about DMV artists, not even DMV artists but unsigned artists. Maybe not even that specific, maybe artists period.

I've already done two tracks. The first is called "Killer Filler". I did it with the notion that people would be expecting two bomb songs and some fillers. Well, we don't do that in '09. There is no such thing as a filler, or mediocre track at that. I've also finished a track called "Stay on Mind". R and B/Heartbreak hybrid, you'll be shocked and amazed. = ].

I want to be remembered as one of the greats, and this next project will mirror that thought. So many times we got caught up in the hype, competing with the guy next to us. Well, what about the guy that's walking a mile ahead? I'm trying to compete with Jay and Kanye', Drake and Wayne, whoever sets the standard for success, I want to be where they're at, maybe two or three steps ahead.

So with this next project, I hope to inspire everyone that listens to aspire to live their Dream. We are all given a telent, a gift from God's divine arsenal to go out and do something good in this world. I've already started, what about you?

It is 3:00 a.m. Eyes struggle to stay open. Clothes can’t come off fast enough. The bed is cold and repulsive. Arctic winds blow through the windows, because the maintenance man never replaced the weatherproofing. The day’s essence still stains clothes, shoes, hats, and the room itself. But as the bed begins to warm from lying in it, the eyes become stale from dry tears. This is the moment of infection.

Depression, loneliness, and complete hopelessness are symptoms of this disease. Each and every one of us fall victim, because the period of incubation is a lifetime. The coming of age is normally when the onslaught begins. Broken promises of weekends with Dad, mom picking you up late from school, and missing gifts from the Christmas lists are a child’s symptoms. Standing in front of the theater waiting for your date at midnight so you could see the 9 o’clock show are an adolescent’s symptoms. But once you approach adulthood, these symptoms start to multiply and diversify. What you once would face days, weeks, and maybe months apart in sorrow now visits you on a daily basis. Family members pass, bank accounts hit zero, car batteries drain, and the rain drops always find your forehead when you do not have an umbrella. The pantries are emptier when no one loves you, or at least it feels that way. So, as the germ grows and spreads, the edge of the bed invites you and your iPod. Otis Redding sings posthumously, offering no remorse for your state of being, only insight and empathy. Even if you could make it to orbit, far away from the aches and pains of living, the solar winds would burn you. They would cast you back down to Misery.

No doctor has a cure to this infliction against man. These are the essence of growth and resistance to failure. Being taken to the brink of extermination, in mind and will, is the facilitating force for this disease. The Blues have no season or location. They move freely in and through every one of us. They hold a reverence only compared to Death’s, for we know they approach us, we know that they will bring pain, but we can only wait and prepare. The Blues are a unavoidable, a hated necessity.

Freakin' MURKED the stage with my boy McMarx. So I'm going to go through the performance, step by step.

The Entrance:
So given the fact that I am a rookie, and I'm REALLY hype, we got there early. So there wasn't really a big entrance. I was kind of uncomfortable, because the other "artists" were kind of just standing around looking THUGGY. Everyone had their hoods from their hoodies on, and I was just kind of happy, went around dapping and introducing myself. [dont think i'll be doing that anymore] I was just like pop locking in the big mirrors, and enjoying myself. The deejay effed with me though. He was cool. Everyone else was too gangster for me.

The WARM-UP:
So since these guys were so antisocial, I just decided to make time fly by myself. You know black people events cant never start on time. Started by just reciting my lyrics. Then, a hell of a cipher incurred. McMarx, Jazz, Mr. Aikens, and MUAH crushed and calmitated things.

THE SHOW!!:

Me and McMarx are dope on stage....point blank. So he comes out with the first verse, I'm like okay I feel you, then he starts spazzing. Word? You aint gon' out spazz me. So second verse, LET IT RIP! But we play off each others energy, dope. Tribe Called Quest would have been PROUD!

Song 2...Come on and Go
So, I hadn't planned on singing, but the notes just came out. And honestly.....I sounded pretty damn good! lol. I was a little winded from switching back and forth between spitting and singing but I got the feel. The wonderful ladies of Philadelphia were kickin' it in the front, and LOVING the show so what more could I ask for. Yea, I did hump the stage....TWICE.

First of all, let me shout TC out for even thinking of this diabolicle beat. Clearly, you know what you were doing. Because as soon as the beat dropped, all of those gritty gangsters were bobbing heads and bouncing bankheads (shoulder leaning). and I SPAZZED!!!!....end of story.

Today is D-day.

It's outtie for me. GOODBYE mid-West.

It's been an experience I must say. From being woken up in the middle of the night by tornado sirens, to random ventures in the city of Chicago. It has truly been a period of growth.

Now back to the D.m.V.

Back to go-go's and chicken'n'mumbo sauce. Back to WKYS. Back to traffic at the most random times of day. Back to running zig zag to my car at the metro stop because a lady in the station said sombody just got shot in the parking lot. Back to seeing TOO MUCH DAMn COVERAGE ON THE REDSKINS!!!! Back to annoying ass tourists blocking the cross section. Back to fightin' highschoolers for a seat at the Magic Johnson Theater. And most importantly, back to waiting for 2 hours outside the club to get in. I LOVE you DC/MD/VA....and I am happy to be back.

I had some issues coming up with a topic for this week's Facts, and with alot of counsel [james goodman, alex furgeson, and kalissa], I have decdided to use none of your suggested topics lol. Well, Alex kinda. But the other ones will appear in future FACTS, trust me.

Todays topic is RAP SUPASTAR!!
You wanna be a rapper and get paid? just follow this weeks FACTS OF LYFE, and trust me, you'll be in the big leagues.

Ready? Let's do it.

Fact: You must place yourself in a category: gangster, back-packer. concious. southern. eastcoast. westcoast. etc....

Fact: Each category had TOO MANY DAMN SUBCATEGORIES! but you must also choose one. Let's examine.
West Coast: Bay area, Gangster, SoCal, Punk, Alternative [alt. will be used to describe those not recognized by the mainstreem]
East Coast: NYC, DMV, Philly
Southern: ATL, HTOWN, any thing encompassed in the state of Florida, random ass states in between texas and Georgia, Ratchett, N.O. Bounce, New Orleans

This week, after receiving much acclaim from the first installment, I've decided to continue the trend, but this time I'm taking you to school. Literally.

This week it's facts about Hampton Universtiy....fashion, language, and recreation.

HU FASHION:
Fact: The official uniform for HU Women is uber big shirts, leg-ins, and....equestrian boots?

Fact: Hampton University is the only place that guys can wear messenger bags and not be homo.

FRIGGIN' AWESOME!

It's too much to just try to break down in one breath...so we are going to take it day by day...

Day ONE, the Arrival:

Get into the Chi on my G-mode with the addidas sweatpants, white tee, and the Foamposite Slams.

Check into the HYATT REGENCY! the hotel was on point people. the view was SICK! I'll take a lake over an ocean any day lol.

So anywayz, change up the fit to business attire to head over to the convention, Ralph Lauren sport coat and slacks, dark green tie with the brown leather dockers slams and I'm out.

FAST FORWARD: Dinner at this Brazilian BBQ joint. Let me just say, you haven't had meat until you've had Brazilian meat [pause.]. But it was good. Pork tenderloin and PLATAnOS!!! AGH!!!!

That nite. Chill. Chill. and mo' Chill.

Made a mad dash around the city for a minute then came back to the Hyatt for what I must say was the GREATEST FREESTYLE SESSION OF ALL TIME! shouts out to Corn , Bates, Matt, LoveRa...GUCCI BANDANNA!

This'll be a first for me and a good look considerin' how much I admire what's going on in the city as far as pop culture right now, and I think that the country's other metropolitan areas should PAY ATTENTION!

So anyway, here are some things I will be looking forward to

- Seeing that statue of Michael Jordan in front of the United Center

[Regardless of the fact that he is the best basketball player of all time, this dude has been immortalized in a mythological type statue, and he's black! go figure lol]

- Spending ridiculous amounts of money in trendy Chi-town boutiques

[NYC and LA hold the specialty fashion down, but Chi-town is right up there with'em I think, and I plan on spazzing]

- I was told there is a district or area in the city that is home to the HIPHOP SUBCULTURE that we have come to know as Cool Kidz, Kidz In the Hall, Kid Sister, modern Kanye West, Lupe and Lupesque artists

[I just noticed alotta those name had "kid" in it, and I say modern Kanye because if you hadn't noticed, Kanye was more Memphis Bleek than Pharell with fashion when he first came out]

- Diving face first into a REAL deep dish pizza [stop being nasty ladies]

Now that's a lot to do in about 2 & 1/2 days, but, I'm Deron damnit....

Let's get it.

Deron is a cool guy.
Fly, Fresh, and Freakin' guaped.

Now this other guy Deron, has those same qualities.
The Hampton Roads native Deron, or "Deron So'Fresh" [tag for his number in my fone, nohomo], is what I call a fashion icon waiting to be discovered. We met @ the club [nohomo, couldn't figgyah out anotha way to put it], he noticed the swag, i seen the swag, same name? Brother from another mother. H4L [homies 4 lyfe, without the drug dealing, gangs, and stuff]
You mite not have seen an article on him in Complex, but his complex sense of style can be seen in the flipped up fitteds, applique stitched hoodies and varsity jackets, and speciality kicks of many kids around the Hampton area. You know you've spotted Deron when you see a squad of fly guys against a backdrop of Enyce and throwbacks with iced grills [not sayin' somethin's wrong with it but, it aint my cup'a'joe]. Occassionally you'll catch me @ the Retro parties or skate joints in the same attire, I'm more of a Polo man on the weekend myself, however.

But enough of the background stuff, let's see what he had to say about fashion....

Deron says that music had the biggest influence on today's fashion frenzies...
"Let me tell you how we went from hoodlum to the gentleman's homie [i.e. Jay-z, T.I.]. This new wave of music has made it okay to beyourself. With the epidemic of lupe and pharrell and kanye....it seems as if being the fly guy is the new trend. You got thugs wearin' vans when back then it was soft [egh iono if that has changed, given all these colorful shoes out now...yum-yums?]. Dudes had to wear timbs and hoodies. But people like me been doin' it for a while. Ppl act like specialty kicks and streetwear brands is a new thing. It's mainstream to be underground nowadays [which kinda sucks, I was different before, now I'm just...ordinary?]."

Deron gives his good, bad, and ugly on today's fashion...
"Well first off I hold a grudge against anyone who owns fake anything [do I get a pass lol]. Second, I hate it when dudes try too hard to go for a certain swag [scarves in the summertime ain't a good look, leave it to the Saudis]. Ppl look uncomfortable in their own clothes cause some of the stuff they wear is relly not them." ---[special note to the gentlemen some of the gentlemen @ HU, and any school for that matter....y'all need help]

Deron gives the basics on how to put together the foundation for a good fit...
"No homo, size matters [can't getta pass for that one, keeps gettin' worse lol] . It don't gotta be tight but just not sloppy [there should be limit for the amount of space required in one's jean legs between their leg and the denim...they over do the skinny toomuch]. It helps keep a clean "rich" look to ur swag . And don't try too hard. It shows" [quite]
he continues...
"Oh yea and dont try to do what other ppl do [souljahboy shades anyone?]. Cause I would never suggest other ppl wear what I do. It wouldn't work. B yourself but use influence from the greats."

Deron tells us who "the Greats" are...
"I think Kanye is really versatile. But I admire alot of underground cats. they're more edgy. Like there's these dudes called the Galaxy riders. There's a crew called fly union from ohio. The greatest are the least known cause they're the least understood."

Deron explains his personal progression and his plans for the future...
"I've noticed my self-influence on everyone that I surround with. Kinda set the standard in my social bracket. Ppl seem to take my style and run with it but,it's cool. It doesn't bother me. IT means that ppl like my style. But right now I'm battling whether or not I wanna start my own line or be a designer, and I think I'm leaning toward designing because mass production ain't my thing"

Duran, who's rap name is SIMP, is ready to unveil to the world what he calls a "back to the basics" project. So Doc' and Marty McFly better look out, cause Duran is back from the future and hungry like a wolf!

Duran on any "chemical assistance" used in the production of this album:
Lol! No pharmaceutics were used for the making of this album. I'm all natural...call me the "Whole foods" of Hip Hop [whole foods is AWESOME, specially the granola crunch mmmm].

Duran on what he specifically takes "back to the basics" on this album:
All of the above really. I like to focus on the [raw] nature of hip hop; the passion, the struggles, the emotion...that's what it's about. We've lost that. Now it's back!

Duran on the effect he wants this album to have on its listeners:
I want people to take notice of talent and not the fashion, glitz and glamour of the music. Bentleys and Platinum chains don't make good music [at least if you're not signed to Cash Money lol]. Artist make good music. If your listening I want you to get the art form and take a piece of each song with you.

Duran on how he was able to put out a MIXTAPE and ALBUM at the SAME dAMN TIME:
Well ive been doing this for years so the material isn't a issue. Material is around us everyday. It's a matter of taking what we see, do and experience and put it in word form. But, foreal foreal; I was in the studio like that. Lol

Duran on how he got some datpiff whateva whateva downloading and I DIDNT lol [sore loser]:
I'm not sure what happened with the datpiff thing, but sonicbids is a membership only site that you gotta pay for. It's good because it allows you to create an EPK (electronic press kit) to send to promoters. A&Rs or whoever. I'd recommend it.

Bill Clinton was running for president, we had just gotten out of Iraq for the first time after puttin' a foot in Sadam's ass. The New Jack Swing was all the rave in little black neighborhoods, along with high top fades and Mars Blackman commercials. The recession was lifting. Michael Jackson released DANGEROUS! A Different World, the cosby Show, and the Fresh Prince sat atop television sitcom ratings. And McDonald's WAS EVERYWHERE!!! Everything had golden arches on it. And the most awesome game ever created, CROSSFIRE!, was released, or re-released, not sure.

This was an awesome time for Americans, black people especially, we were still educated [STING!] and still had some sort of identity [POW!]. But now, the last thing foreigners wanna see are a buncha bad ass Americans step onto the court with their fancy crossovers and delicious jumpshots, they just wanna throttle us and import they're best players into the NBA, and when the All Star game comes say, "we got more than you do!!!" in a taunting kindergarten voice. So, if this team wins gold, they'll be doing alot more for America's international image than George Bush apologizing for being an idiot.

So i say, go UNCLE SAM's!
Smack Yao Ming in the face and say, "that's how we made it, YAOMEEEEEN!!"
and then throw money in the crowd @ beijing....
and then go to the sweatshops where some of the people in the crowd make their sneakers and kick booty....AWESOME!

With the bricks being laid for a possible rift between two native rappers of the D.M.V that hold deals with major labels [Wale and Marky if you been under a rock for two days] upon us, I ask my self, what's beef?

Now, we all know that this situation is FAR away from beef. @ least I think so. But some of the imaginary minds of adoring fans in the D.M.V consider it so, given the competitive "Fuck a nigga that don't fuck with me" attitude of the area. so again, what's beef?

Beef in without context isn't hatred, but more so, the wish to terminate an enemies situation [success, relationship, happiness, or even life].When specified to music [im tired of specifying the difference between hip hop and rap, so it's just fuckin' musick], the same things apply.
But i feel, if one artist has a rift with another, these differences should probably be kept off wax, for the simple fact that, a track should be something so dear to the artist that for someone else to make a track about them means they really, really don't like him/her. so, i guess i'm saying, unless i want to end your career, i'm not going to make a track about you. and ending someone's career or "ethering" it, is pretty damn malicious.

so back to marky and wale, two artists with a rift, or, two artist competing for that position as "DC's 1st". This def is bigger than say a CashMoney vs. NoLimit, where two musical entities competed for their city's title as official representative. This competition is between two lyrical and truly talented artists that go against the status quo.
this is surely bigger than wale vs. marky, this is innovation vs. the industry!

Marcus McCoy, a sophomore student at Coppin State University, doesn’t brush his teeth or wash his face after he wakes up in the morning. Eventually he does, but the first thing on his agenda is checking the popular auctioning website, Ebay.com, for an update on new vintage sneakers for sale.
His day starts at around 9 o’clock, when he leaves for his first class. But, even McCoy would tell you that being on time for anything isn’t easy as a sneaker dealer.
“For me, the sale and resale of kicks is a business that brings in legitimate income,” McCoy said. “I have it so that my cell phone gets alerts when new shoes go up for sale or are released in stores. So if I’m in the middle of something and I get one of those alerts, whatever I’m doing at the moment is dropped so that I can see what the deal is with these kicks.”
Sneaker dealers like McCoy have developed intricate networks of communication to make information about a new or one of a kind sneaker available in an instance. News of kicks only released in Hong Kong can reach the States within hours. Rich Parker, CEO of Raw Talent Enterprises and sneaker enthusiast, explained the intricacy of the sneaker culture’s web of information.
“Most of the praise can be given to the internet for allowing people to access the stock of different sneaker boutiques when and where they please,” he said. “But I think the biggest component is the use of instant messaging, because with instant messaging language is not a barrier.” Parker said that language is the one obstacle that could greatly affect the flow of information because the people involved represent a wide array of cultures and backgrounds.
Sneaker enthusiasts or “sneakerheads” can be found on every continent from many different creeds. Josh “Dizzy” Smith, a sneaker collector and dealer of Nigerian origin, says that on a daily basis, he is in contact with at least two people from outside the U.S. borders on business terms.
This large community of shoe lovers is also very competitive. With major companies releasing as little as 100 pairs of some sneaker styles, demand for specific styles of shoes is very high. The “Skate or Die” edition of the Nike SB Dunk sold out within an hour of its release at the Norfolk site of the popular specialty sneaker store, Sole Brothers. On Niketalk.com, a popular message board for sneaker enthusiasts, reports of the “Skate or Die” selling out in record time were posted from all over the world. Messengers in places like Tokyo, London, and even Berlin, complained about the scarce availability of the shoe.
The competition in sneaker culture is not limited to the sale and resale of shoes. Clothing and accessories attributed with sneaker culture has also become a hot commodity. Lines like Stussy, Bathing Ape, and Billionaire Boys Club have become synonymous with sneaker culture. J.D., the manager of an Up Against the Wall store in Washington, D.C., says, “Sneaker culture reaches into everything, man. If it wasn’t for sneaker culture, we wouldn’t have a lot of the clothes that we have in here now.”
One of his concerns about the trends that popular culture is pulling from sneaker culture was that the classic styles developed would become faddish. Aside from its current state, sneaker culture has always been with us in ways, from the skinny rolled-up jeans with Chuck Taylors in the 1950’s to the shell top Adidas of the late 1980’s. This is an entity that will out live fads as long as new innovative sneakers are realeased.

Today, I was offered 4000 BUCKS in an internship and 1000 for a scholarship by the Scripps news foundation. DAMN! That is a good luck.

But....
There'z 1 BIG problem...
The internship is in TULSA, OKLAHOMA!!...Now, I am not saying there is anything wrong with Tulsa...I've never been there so how would I know?

But that's the problem...I know absolutely nothing about Tulsa. And, upon accepting the offer, I'll be there for 2 MONTHS! ouch...lol.

Lets break this down...
- I need to do some research about Oklahoma, let alone Tulsa
- How do I feel about living in a city where I have no family for 2 months?
- That paycheck is PRETTY thick....mmmm hmmmmm
- BUT THE MUSICK! my precious music....ugh....that's a big monkey wrench in my rap career...Or is it?

I am an artist wherever I go. So does it matter? Hip hop will still be dead. Souljahboy will probably still have a record deal. And, after I get my paycheck sooner or later I'll be a broke college student again. So does it matter? No.

In other news...Allegedly, Jay-Z plans to put out a third installment to the Blueprint series. All I have to say is, Lil Wayne can chill for another year or two on the G.O.A.T stuff. That's just me though....
